The French arrested in Mali and accused of having participated in an attempt to destabilize the institutions is the object of “accusations without foundation”, secured on Saturday, August 16, the Foreign Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“A dialogue (with the Malian authorities) is being carried out to dissipate any misunderstanding” and obtain the “without delay” of this member of the French embassy in Bamako, the ministry adds.
Vienna Convention
The Malian authorities announced this Thursday, August 14, the arrest of a French citizen presented as working for the “French intelligence service” on Thursday, August 14. The Power Board in Mali accused “foreign states” of being behind an attempt to destabilize, led by “a group of marginal elements of the Malian Security Armed Forces.”
The Board led by President Assimi Goïta, who came to power after two coup d’etat in 2020 and 2021, moved away from Western partners, especially the former French colonizer, to become politically and militarily in Russia.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that the French decree benefits from the “state of the Vienna Convention that governs diplomatic relations”, and requests its release “in the application of this agreement.”
