Never a meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin seemed so close, after the trip of European leaders to the White House on Monday, August 18.
Donald Trump received several European leaders in the US capital, including Emmanuel Macron, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, or German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
During a meeting with these former leaders, Donald Trump eclipsed for 40 minutes to call his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The latter told the US president to be ready to meet with the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. This would be the first from the large -scale beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022. Until then, the Kremlin teacher refused to know his Ukrainian counterpart.
A “within two weeks” meeting
The place of a possible summit among Russian and Ukrainian leaders remains “to be determined” according to Donald Trump.
“After this meeting, we will organize a tripartite meeting, in which the two presidents will participate, and myself,” explains the White House tenant.
This meeting could intervene quickly. The Ukrainian leader told reporters gathered in front of the White House to be “ready” to meet his Russian counterpart. Volodymyr Zelensky wants this to intervene “as quickly as possible.”
“But for that, we need the agreement of all parties,” warns the president of Ukraine who says that “he is ready to solve all painful questions for us.”
“That is why we are ready for a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin,” continues the Ukrainian leader, who welcomes “a good result.”
In the exchange menu it will include the issue of territories that will be “discussed” with Vladimir Putin, admits Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the meeting between Russian and Ukrainian presidents could take place “within two weeks.” Information confirmed by Emmanuel Macron, who explains that the meeting is “acted” and will take place “in the next few days.”
For the French president, this “important (…) day will mark the conflict in Ukraine.” Beyond a possible summit between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, Emmanuel Macron announced an “American commitment” in security guarantees for Ukraine. These will be “formalized (…) within ten days”, according to the president of Ukraine, who welcomes herself that “each” of the participants in the meetings in the White House “did its share of the work.”
