Macabre discovery. The American state inspectors of Colorado have found about twenty decomposition bodies at a funeral home located in the city of Pueblo, reports the American news agency AP.
Upon entering the establishment on Wednesday, August 20, the inspectors found a “strong smell of decomposition,” says the document written by the regulatory authorities. When opening a hidden door behind a cardboard screen, which Brian Cotter, the owner of the facilities, had asked them not to open, the inspectors discovered about twenty decomposition bodies.
A “betrayal of families”
Brian Cotter told authorities that some bodies have been waiting to be incinerated during the last fifteen years. He also explained that he may have given false ashes to families who want the cremation of their deceased.
“This is a deep violation of trust and a betrayal of the families who entrusted their relatives to this funeral directory company,” said Armando Saldate III, director of the Office of Research of the Department of Public Security in Colorado.
The bodies were manipulated with “respect and humanity,” he said while the researchers collected evidence during Thursday. At this stage, the number of bodies discovered in the room is an estimate since they have not yet been eliminated.
An establishment never controlled
Brian Cotter has not been arrested and no charge is held against him, said the town county prosecutor. The investigation continues.
This is the first time that Brian Cotter’s establishment has been controlled by the authorities. Until last year, Colorado practically had no legislation that allowed control of this type of establishment, unlike most US states. This situation has allowed many abuses.
Almost 200 bodies that should be cremated or buried were notably discovered in 2023 in the house of the manager of a funeral company. It was sentenced to 20 years in prison and a fine of more than one million dollars.
