Almost 30,000 people evacuated in Vietnam when Typhon Kajiki arrives

Almost 30,000 people were evacuated to Vietnam this Monday, August 25, as a violent typhoon approaches. About 325,500 people should be evacuated in total in the country.

Tens of thousands of residents were evacuated this Monday, August 25 of the coastal regions of Vietnam at a time when the Kajiki typhoon is preparing to touch the central region of the country with winds of almost 160 km/h. Kajiki, the fifth typhoon to hit Vietnam this year, is currently unleashing Tonkin’s Gulf with waves that reach 9.5 meters.

The typhoon must touch the earth at 1 pm local time (6 hours GMT) with winds of 157 km/h, according to the National Center for the Hydro-Metéorological prognosis in Vietnam.

Some 325,500 people from five coastal provinces must be evacuated to temporary shelters in public schools and buildings, authorities said.

Boats retired, two closed airports

The center of the city of Vinh, a coastal city in the center of the country, was flooded during the night. In the morning, the streets were generally deserted and most of the closed stores and restaurants, merchants and residents had also protected entries with sandbags.

At dawn, almost 30,000 people had been evacuated from the region, two national airports were closed and all fishing boats located on the Typhoon road in the port were removed.

However, the storm must lose in intensity considerably after having touched the earth.

More than a dozen interior flights in Vietnam were canceled this Sunday, while the island of Hainan, China, evacuated 20,000 residents when the typhoon passed through the southern coast.

In Vietnam, more than 100 people were killed or missing due to natural disasters during the first seven months of 2025, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Economic losses have been estimated at more than $ 21 million.

Vietnam underwent a loss of $ 3.3 billion last September due to Yagi’s typhoon, which swept the north of the country and caused hundreds of deaths.
