The UN insisted on Tuesday, August 26, the fact that Israel not only investigated mortal strikes in Gaza such as those of a hospital that cost the lives of at least 20 people, but also to ensure that these investigations lead to results.
“The Israeli authorities have announced, in the past, investigations on such homicides (…), but these investigations must lead to results,” said the spokesman for the United Nations Human Rights Office, Thameen Al-Kheetan, journalists in Geneva.
His statements are the day after Israelí attacks Nasser hospital in Khan Younès, the southern city of the Gaza Strip, which left at least 20 dead, including five journalists, causing an international protest.
“We have not seen any results yet”
Reuters and Associated Press press agencies, as well as the Qatar al Jazeera chain, published press releases that pay tribute to their murdered collaborators, while the Israeli army announced Monday the opening of an investigation.
“Of course, it is Israel’s responsibility, as an occupying power, investigating, but these investigations must lead to results,” said Thameen Kheetan.
“We have not yet seen any results or measure of empowerment. We are still waiting for the results of these surveys and ask that justice be done and that those responsible are responsible,” he added.
At least 247 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war in Gaza, launched by the unprecedented attack against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023 in Israel.
“These journalists are the eyes and ears of the whole world and must be protected,” said Thameen Kheetan.
A “in depth and independent” survey
He was asked to find out if Monday’s attack could be described as “double strike”, in which a first attack is followed by a second aimed at rescuers and other civilians, Thameen Kheetan replied that this should be the subject of an investigation.
“We can say that the Israeli army has launched several air attacks in Nasser’s medical complex, and that there have been two air attacks in a short time,” he said.
“We know that one of the five journalists seems to have been killed during the first air attack, while three others seem to have been killed in the second strike,” he added.
“This incident and homicides of all civilians, including journalists, must be subject to in -depth and independent investigation, and must follow justice,” said Thameen Kheetan.
