More than 800 people have been executed in Iran since the beginning of the year, the UN said this Friday, August 29, denouncing “a systematic scheme for the use of the death penalty as a tool for state intimidation.” The United Nations Human Rights Office said there was a “great increase in executions during the first semester of 2025”.
“The Iranian authorities have executed at least 841 people from the beginning of the year and until August 28, 2025, Ravina Shamdasani spokeswoman told reporters in Geneva, warning that” the real situation could be different. “It could be worse, given the lack of transparency.”
In July alone, he declared that Iran had executed at least 110 people, twice as many people executed in July 2024.
“The high number of executions indicates a systematic scheme to use the death penalty as a state intimidation tool, with a disproportionate approach to ethnic minorities and migrants,” he warned.
Psychological trauma
Ravina Shamdasani has particularly deplored the use of public executions in Iran, the Rights Office has documented seven of these cases since the beginning of the year.
“Public executions add an additional layer of indignation to human dignity, … not only to the dignity of interested persons, those who are executed, but also to those of all who must witness it,” he said.
“Psychological trauma to attend an audience, especially for children, is unacceptable,” was outraged.
11 people mentioned by an “imminent execution”
Ravina Shamdasani said that 11 people currently faced an “imminent execution” in Iran, including six who were accused of “armed rebellion” due to their alleged belonging to the opposition in the exile of Mujahideen of the town of Iran.
The other five were sentenced to death for their participation in large -scale demonstrations of 2022, he said, adding that the Iranian Supreme Court had confirmed last week the death sentence of the rights of workers Sharifeh Mohammadi.
“The death penalty is incompatible with the right to life and irreconcilable with human dignity,” he insisted. “It creates an unacceptable risk of executing innocent people. It should never be imposed on acts protected by the International Human Rights Law,” said the activist.
The UN Office of Rights urged the Iranian government “not to apply the death penalty against these people and other people in the death corridor,” Ravina Shamdasani said.
