The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, intends to talk this Thursday with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, additional sanctions against Russia, said on Wednesday, September 3 during a trip to Copenhagen.
“Tomorrow we will try to join President Trump and talk about it,” said Volodymyr Zelensky, who will be in Paris on Thursday for a voluntary coalition meeting, a set of countries that militarily support Ukraine.
During his trip to the White House with a handful of European leaders on August 18, Volodymyr Zelensky asked Donald Trump to impose sanctions and press Vladimir Putin if he did not go to the negotiating table.
“He said he would respond in a few weeks,” said Volodymyr Zelensky. “From what I understand, these are two weeks or at most three weeks. The two weeks end tomorrow,” he added.
“European loans” to provide security guarantees
For its part, the European Commission announced last week that it would offer to member countries shortly a 19 sanctions package.
The coalition of volunteers gathers around thirty countries, mainly European, ready to provide support to the Ukrainian army, or even deploy soldiers in Ukraine once the fire is high, to deter Russia from any new attack.
Europeans must act on Thursday, during a meeting in Paris and in videoconference, which are “ready” for the granting of security guarantees in Ukraine and are now waiting for the concrete “support” of the Americans, according to the French presidency.
“We have a solid base in the form of bilateral agreements, in particular with Denmark, and we share the opinion that the future security of Ukraine requires a provision of article 5,” Volodymyr Zelensky said in reference to the mutual defense provided for in the NATO Treaty.
President Donald Trump promised on August 18 that the United States would be together with the Europeans, as part of these security guarantees for Ukraine that are supposed to be implemented after a high or a peace agreement, which remains to be found.
“We have also received signals from the United States that indicate that it will bring a ‘stop’, which is important,” added Volodymyr Zelensky in reference to the US security network whose form remains to be cleared.
