One person died and another six were injured this Thursday, September 4 during a knife attack in an indigenous village in downtown Canada, said the Federal Police.
The suspect was also killed during the incident, said Royal Canada Gendarmerie (RCMP) in the province of Manitoba. The incident occurred in Hollow Agua, an indigenous reserve, isolated and located more than 200 kilometers north of Winnipeg, the provincial capital.
An open investigation
The police have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack and the motivations of the suspect. He immediately has not given details about the assailant or in the type of weapon used.
In 2022, 11 people had been killed and another 18 wounds in the aboriginal community of James Smith Cree Nation and in the small neighboring town of Weldon, Saskatchewan, the neighboring province. Almost all victims were native.
These represent 5% of the population of Canada. They live in communities often hit by unemployment and poverty, and there are also more often homicide victims than the average.
