A French, three British … the nationalities of the 16 dead victims in the funicular accident in Lisbon

The Portuguese Judicial Police announced the nationalities of the 16 victims of the funicular accident in Lisbon. Among them, five Portuguese and eleven foreigners, including a French.

The Portuguese Judicial Police announced this Friday, September 5, the nationalities of all the people who died on Friday, September 5 during the funicular accident in Lisbon this Wednesday, September 3. A final evaluation communicated by the Prime Minister reported 16 dead and more injured, including five serious.

At the beginning of this Friday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barot had already indicated that a French was also one of the victims of the accident.

Five Portuguese also died during the drama. The police also tell three British, two South Korean people, as well as two Canadians. Finally, a Swiss, a Ukrainian and an American also died.

If many foreign people were killed during the accident, it is because the funicular is an emblem of the Portuguese capital and today is widely used by tourists to walk around the city.

All Lisbon funicular now closed

Inspections and surveys are under this funicular accident.

Witnesses of the scene evoke a car that has descended the slope “at full speed”, before derailing and crashing into a building. According to local media, a cable has separated, causing loss of funicular control.

From the drama, all Lisbon funicles are closed and inspected meticulously, according to Mayor Carlos Moedas. Portuguese workers unions already mention a “serious mechanical failure.”

According to the Portuguese Portuguese news agency, many complaints about the need for elevator maintenance, including the Funicular of Gloria, had been presented by workers’ unions against Carris.
