Portugal will officially recognize the state of Palestine on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Friday, September 19.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that Portugal will recognize the State of Palestine (…). The official recognition declaration will take place on Sunday, September 21,” just before the UN General Assembly, said a statement published on the Ministry’s website.
On Monday, September 22, about 140 heads of state and government are expected in New York for the annual UN Mass of the UN High, where the future of the Palestinians and Gaza will be in the center of attention, even in the absence of Mahmoud Abbas. The recognition of the Palestine State will normally formalize.
A summit planned to recognize the state of Palestine
At the end of July already, Lisbon had announced its intention to recognize the state of Palestine after “multiple contacts” with its partners and taking into account in particular “the extremely worrying evolution of the conflict, both humanitarian and repeated references to a possible annexation of the Palestinian territories” of Israel, then detailed a press release from the office of the prime minister.
Portugal will not be alone since a summit on Monday in New York, Co -scraired for France and Saudi Arabia, apart from the UN General Assembly, will be dedicated to the future of the solution of two states, Israeli and Palestinian, who lives next to peace and security.
And according to the French presidency, nine other countries have planned to recognize the Palestinian State on the occasion of this meeting: Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Malta, United Kingdom, Saint-Marin and France.
Last week, the UN General Assembly adopted an overwhelming majority last week a text that supports a future Palestinian state but unequivocally excluding Hamas.
A neighbor of Portugal, Spain, acknowledged the state of Palestine in May 2024 with Ireland and Norway.
Around three quarters of the 193 Member States of the UN recognize the Palestinian State proclaimed by the Palestinian Management in exile in 1988.
