Emmanuel Macron recognized the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, September 22. The French president took the opportunity of his presence in the gallery of making this solemn statement.
“The time has come to stop the war, the time of peace has come,” began the French head of state before asking for the release of the 48 hostages in the hands of Hamas and stop “massacres in Gaza.” “The time has come because the urgency is everywhere,” he hastened.
Emmanuel Macron acknowledged that the voices opposed this recognition. “Some will say too late, others will say too early. One thing is safe, we can’t wait.”
He also asked the United Nations General Assembly to go at the end of the process launched in 1947 with the decision to share the Palestine agent in two states with the right to self -determination.
“The international community dedicated the state of Israel there, fulfilling the destiny of this people finally, after millennia of errors and persecution, and that could find such a beautiful democracy there. The promise of an Arab State remains unusual. Since then, it is a long path of hope and despair mixed with the Israeli and the Palestinians who have traveled in their own way.”
Waiting weeks
Emmanuel Macron had warned for several weeks that he would proceed to this recognition with respect to “the extreme urgency of the situation in Gaza and in the rest of the Palestinian territories.” He arrested many times by the French who did not understand this decision, the Head of State published in X a video this Sunday to express himself.
“I was injured, beaten and shared the pain of all the families of the victims and hostages of October 7, we do not forget any. A few days ago in this office, I received some of these families. I do not forget the suffering, the anguish of all the families of the victims of Gaza and those who live today, without having access to humanitarian aid.
“What France wants is peace”
“Basically, all lives are the same (…) What France wants is peace. A high immediate fire, that the 48 hostages are released without delay. What France wants is the return of humanitarian aid to Gaza, a day after possible in Gaza with a jasas dismantled and fired from power (… what France wants, these are two states that live in peace.”
To date, more than 150 countries recognize the state of Palestine. In doing so, France becomes the third country of the G7 to recognize this state after Great Britain and Canada this Sunday. Several western countries that have so far refused to take this stage have decided in recent months in view of the devastating war that the Israeli army in Gaza, in retaliation for the murderous terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023.
