War in Ukraine, suspicions of Russian “deep interference” … Moldova chooses its deputies in a high voltage vote

The electoral centers opened this Sunday, September 28 in Moldova for the election of deputies. A particularly expected vote in a context of intense tensions with particular suspicions of Russian interference.

The Moldavos began this Sunday, September 28 to choose their deputies this Sunday, September 28 and will decide on the future of their country near Ukraine in the war, between the prosecution on the road to the European Union or an approach with Russia, the Government and the EU accuses Moscow “of deep interference”.

A sign of the participation of this high voltage choice and for the uncertain result, each camp accuses the other of manipulation and intimidation of intimidation. President Proeuropea, Maia Sandu, whose party of action and solidarity (no) is at the top of the surveys, but has lost ground since her wide victory in 2021, the alarm sounded at the beginning of the week.

“Hundreds of Millions of Moscow”

She denounced the “hundreds of millions of euros” shed by Moscow to buy votes, orchestrate online misinformation campaigns and organize violence.

According to Igor Botan, director of the Moldavan Adept Center for reflection, Moldova “has never seen such a level (foreign interference) in an electoral campaign” since its independence proclaimed in 1991. On Thursday, the European Union accused Moscow “of deep interference.” The accusations challenged by Russia, claiming that the Moldavas authorities spread the anti -Russian rhetoric.

Since August 1, the Moldova Police has carried out more than 600 excavations in relation to attempts for electoral corruption or destabilization, according to Moldavo’s Prime Minister Dorin Réan. Dozens of people have been arrested.

“The agony of a government”

Former President Igor Dodon (2016-2020), one of the leaders of the Porussian patriotic block, the main training of the opposition, said Friday that he attended Friday “the agony of a government (…) in panic.” In a video, he asked the Moldavos to vote “voting in mass.”

“I am convinced that the opposition will have the majority,” he said during an interview with AFP, saying he wanted to continue “negotiations with the EU.”

“But we will also restore relations with the Russian Federation,” he said, adding that he would first attack the socio -economic situation of the country, one of the poorest in Europe. This situation has led many Moldova to emigrate: more than one million of them live abroad when some 2.4 million remained in the country.

The voices of the diaspora have been particularly coveted, since they contributed strongly last year to the selection of Mrs. Sandu to the presidential elections. Many of them parade in the streets of Chisinau on Friday afternoon in the call of the PAS, they cry for “vote for peace” or “we want to be in Europe.”

“I hope the passage prevails and that we enter Europe,” said Olga, a retiree who lives abroad but who vote again, refusing to give his last name.

EU membership in question

Maia Sandu managed to obtain official discussions for the Moldova membership to the EU and many Western financial aid for the former Soviet Republic, which still has many Russian speakers.

However, Tudor Soilita, a 33 -year -old blogger questioned in the streets of the capital, thinks that his country must be “neutral, independent, with his own sovereignty.”

About twenty independent games and candidates are running along the ballot that must provide 101 seats. On Friday, the Electoral Commission excluded two pro-ruse parties from the race due to irregularities in financing, decisions denounced by the opposition.

The analysts interviewed by AFP are cautious about the result, “very difficult to predict,” according to Igor Botan. “Everything will be played at the last moment,” said Valeriu Pasha, of the Watchdog reflection group, which does not exclude a fragmented assembly, synonymous with instability.

The electoral centers opened at 4:00 am GMT and will close at 6:00 pm GMT. The participation of the diaspora (300,000 of them had voted in 2024) and that of the separatist region of transdniestiestria, which leans in favor of Russia, will be observed particularly.

In 2021, national participation reached 52.3%. The PAS had won with 52.8% of the votes against 27.2% for the blockade of Socialists and Communists (Besc) of Mr. Dodon. “On Monday 29, we will meet in the city center to defend the results of the vote,” the latter promised.
