Since yesterday, several locations in Catalonia and the Valencia region have been placed in red surveillance due to heavy rains that have caused floods.

The Spanish region of Valencia and other areas in eastern Spain registered heavy rains on Sunday night to Monday, without important acquaintances, and remain on red alert, 11 months after mortal floods in October 2024.

“Very complicated situation today in the Mediterranean region,” warned the National Meteorological Agency Aemet on social network X on Monday morning.

Night precipitation caused some floods and even overflowed a ravine in Aldaia, one of the Valencian towns most affected by floods that left more than 230 dead last year in eastern Spain, but without causing bodily damage for the moment, local media said.

Closed schools in Valencia

On Sunday, the Aemet had declared the red alert of “extraordinary danger” in certain parts of the provinces of Tarragona, Castellón and Valence. Residents of the region have received a message from civil protection asking them to be extremely attentive. The Valencia City Council decided not to open schools and universities on Monday, as well as libraries, parks, gardens and cemeteries.

Other locations in the Metropolitan Area of the Third City of Spain, very affected by the floods of last year, and from the south of Catalonia made the same decision.

The floods of October 2024 had been caused by extremely abundant rains, a consequence of a cold fall (isolated depression at great altitude, quite frequent in autumn on the coast of the Spanish Mediterranean) whose effects are reinforced by climate change and the important urbanization of the affected areas.

The catastrophe had angered the victims, who had criticized the management of the alert and help, in the context of the controversy between the central government of the left and the correct regional authorities in the skills with each other in these areas.

Since then, the demonstrations regularly meet residents who criticize the regional executive for not having warned them enough before the danger of torrential rains.
