A barely veiled allusion. The president of the Norwegian Nobel committee responded without naming Donald Trump, during the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize, while the American president coveted the award, this Friday, October 10.
“We made our decision based solely on the work done and the will of Alfred Nobel,” Jørgen Watne Frydnes told reporters.
Referring in particular to Donald Trump’s repeated comments, Jørgen Watne Frydnes added: “In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think this committee has seen all kinds of campaigns, media tensions. We receive several thousand letters every year, in which people say what, in their opinion, leads to peace.”
Jørgen Watne Frydnes recalled that “this committee [Nobel norvégien] sits in a room with portraits of the winners hanging. “This piece is full of courage and integrity.”
An award-winning Venezuelan opponent
Donald Trump has insisted since his return to the White House in January 2025 that he deserves to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. According to him, he played a leading role in resolving several wars, including the one in Gaza, and as such should receive this award.
Despite his wishes and repeated calls to obtain it, he was not chosen by the committee. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this Friday, October 10, to the leader of the Venezuelan opposition María Corina Machado.
Donald Trump has yet to react directly, but White House communications director Steven Cheung said on X that “the Nobel committee has shown that it prioritizes politics over peace.” He also assured that “President Trump will continue to conclude peace agreements, ending wars and saving lives.”
On Thursday afternoon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi declared that the American president deserved this Nobel Peace Prize for his plan to end the war in Gaza.
