Imprisoned since November 2024 in Algeria, Boualem Sansal was elected member of the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature of Belgium. The five-year prison sentence imposed on the French-Algerian writer was confirmed on appeal on July 1.

The Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, imprisoned for almost a year in Algeria, has been elected member of the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature of Belgium, his permanent secretary, Yves Namur, announced to AFP on Sunday, October 12.

“Boualem Sansal values ​​the creative function of the writer, which is inseparable from the freedom in which it is exercised,” the Academy, which awarded him a prize for French-speaking literature in 2007, stressed in a statement.

His five-year prison sentence upheld on appeal

The 80-year-old author, ill and imprisoned since November 2024 for “undermining national unity”, had his five-year prison sentence confirmed on appeal by the Algerian courts on July 1.
