Belarusian Foreign Minister “died suddenly”

Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, 64, died suddenly, Belarusian diplomacy reported in a statement by the state news agency BELTA, quoted by the Spanish news agency Efe.

“Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei died suddenly,” the country’s diplomatic spokesman, Anatoli Glaz, said without elaborating.

During his tenure, Belarus came under heavy criticism from Western countries for an increasingly violent crackdown on the opposition, for holding elections that many observers say lacked transparency, and for allowing its territory to be used as a base for Russian troops to attack. Ukraine.

Makei has been at the helm of Belarusian diplomacy for more than a decade and took office on August 20, 2012.

Previously, he had been chief of staff to the President of Belarus for four years.
