The Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon left one dead and seven injured this Thursday, October 16; The Israeli army claimed to have attacked Hezbollah and its allies, while the Lebanese president deplored attacks on “civilian facilities.”
The Lebanese Health Ministry said one person was killed in an attack in the eastern city of Chmistar. One person was injured in Bnaafoul, in the Saida district (southwest), and another six in Ansar, in the Nabatieh district (south), according to him.
President Joseph Aoun said the Israeli strikes targeted “civilian facilities,” condemning what he sees as a violation of the ceasefire negotiated last year.
“Repeated Israeli aggression is part of a systematic policy aimed at destroying productive infrastructure, hampering economic recovery and undermining national stability under false pretenses of security,” said Joseph Aoun.
Facilities used by an affected NGO
The Israeli army said in a statement that it had “attacked Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure… in the Mazraat Sinai region of southern Lebanon.”
It also said it had attacked facilities used by Green Without Borders, a US-sanctioned NGO that Israel believes “operated under civilian cover to conceal Hezbollah’s presence in the border area with Israel.”
Israel has bombed Lebanon several times in recent months despite reaching a ceasefire in November, after more than a year of clashes with the pro-Iran Hezbollah movement that degenerated into two months of open war.
