Benjamin Netanyahu announces he will seek another term as prime minister

The Israeli prime minister declared this Saturday on Channel 14 that he was sure of his victory. He holds the record for the longest number of years in this position.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Saturday night that he would seek a new mandate in the upcoming elections.

Invited to the set of Channel 14, and to the question “Are you thinking of running to become Prime Minister in the next elections?”, Benjamin Netanyahu responded affirmatively.

To the question: “Will you win if you run?”, he also answered “yes.”

Record mandates

Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of Likud, the main party of the Israeli right, holds the record for the longest number of years at the head of the Israeli government (more than 18 years in total, with interruptions, since 1996).

During the last legislative elections in 2022, the right-wing bloc led by Benjamin Netanyahu, who was ousted from power in June 2021 after 12 years of continuous rule, was victorious in the legislative elections.

Specifically, his party had obtained 32 seats in the Knesset. Their allies at the time had won 18 seats for the ultra-Orthodox and 14 for the “Religious Zionism” alliance, a record for the far right.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s current term has been marked by massive demonstrations against a proposed judicial reform.

Since the start of the war caused by the unprecedented attack carried out by Hamas from Gaza, the families have also harshly criticized its handling of the issue of hostages kidnapped by the Palestinian Islamist movement.
