The Ecuadorian president, Daniel Noboa, declared himself the victim of a poisoning attempt this Thursday, October 23, with chocolates and jams mixed with “three chemicals”, received during a public event.
This is the second complaint filed by the government for attempted murder against President Daniel Noboa, in a context of intense demonstrations by indigenous populations against his policies.
The presence of these three chemical compounds “in high concentration cannot be involuntary,” said Daniel Noboa in an interview with CNN. The military body responsible for his security filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office.
“We filed a complaint, we presented the evidence, the concentration of three chemicals” in the sweets, the president added.
They have already filed a complaint for “attempted murder”
At the beginning of October, the Ecuadorian government claimed, without being able to verify it, that the car in which Daniel Noboa was traveling had been the target of bullets attributed to indigenous populations. Quito had filed a complaint for “attempted homicide.”
Since mid-September, the Noboa government has faced demonstrations accompanied by road blockades in several provinces, at the call of the largest organization of indigenous peoples in the country (Conaie), opposed to the elimination of the diesel subsidy.
A referendum must be held on November 16, through which Daniel Noboa hopes to pave the way for a constituent assembly, with a view to providing the country with a more repressive constitution against drug trafficking.
