Donald Trump calls Russian nuclear missile test “inappropriate”

Vladimir Putin praised this Sunday the successful test of a Russian nuclear-powered cruise missile capable of traveling thousands of kilometers. Given his inability to bring Moscow to the negotiating table over Ukraine, Donald Trump considered this announcement “inappropriate.”

Donald Trump considered “inappropriate” this Monday, October 27, the announcement made the day before by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, about the successful final test of a Russian nuclear-powered cruise missile.

“It is inappropriate for Putin to say that. He should end the war in Ukraine,” the US president said. “This war that was supposed to last a week will soon enter its fourth year. This is what I should do instead of testing missiles,” he continued during an exchange with journalists aboard the plane that will take him to Japan, on the second day of his tour of Asia.

“It is a unique creation that no one else in the world has,” the Russian president said Monday, adding that the Bourevestnik (“storm bird” in Russian) has an “unlimited range.”

During the last test, on October 21, the cruise missile remained in the air for “about 15 hours”, traveling more than 14,000 kilometers, said the head of the Russian General Staff, Valéri Gerassimov, adding that “this is not a limit” for this weapon.

US “nuclear submarine” off Russian coast

“They know that we have a nuclear submarine, the best in the world, right off their coasts,” also stressed Donald Trump, who had already mentioned this deployment recently.

The American president maintains an extremely fluctuating relationship with his Russian counterpart. Donald Tump, having mentioned an upcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary, backtracked. He said Saturday that he would not “waste time” scheduling a new meeting with the Russian president without a deal in sight to end the conflict in Ukraine.

The United States also announced sanctions last week against two giants of the Russian hydrocarbon sector, Rosneft and Lukoil, the first significant measures taken by Donald Trump against Russia since his return to power.
