The German authorities announced this Sunday, November 2, the arrest in Berlin of a 22-year-old Syrian suspected of preparing an Islamist attack, in a context of growing violence in Germany.
The suspect, arrested on Saturday in the Neukölln district, is suspected of having prepared an “attack motivated by jihad”, a spokesman for the Berlin prosecutor’s office told AFP. Authorities did not provide further details.
Detained in a detention center, the young man must be presented before an investigating judge on Sunday afternoon.
He is being prosecuted for preparing a serious act that endangers the State, this judicial source added.
Several knife attacks in recent months
According to the popular newspaper Bild, during searches carried out by special forces in three Berlin homes of the suspect, materials that could be used to make explosives were seized.
The attack would have targeted the capital, without further details being revealed, according to the newspaper.
Germany has seen several deadly knife attacks in recent months, as well as jihadist-motivated attacks and far-right violence that have brought security issues to the forefront.
Berlin, a major European metropolis, remains under close surveillance, particularly since the deadliest jihadist attack on a Christmas market, when a truck crash left 12 dead in December 2016.
