US condemns intercontinental ballistic missile launches, calls for more sanctions

The United States has condemned the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) fired by North Korea on Thursday and called for strict enforcement of UN sanctions against Pyongyang.

The launch “underscores the need for all countries to fully implement Security Council resolutions” to sanction North Korea, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said.

The launch of the ICBM appears to have failed, the South Korean military said.

Two more missiles were launched over Japan, towards the Pacific Ocean, forcing the Japanese government to warn the population of some regions to seek shelter or stay at home.

The launches came a day after North Korea fired more than 20, the highest number ever recorded in a single day.

One of those missiles flew toward a populated South Korean island and landed near the tense maritime border of rival neighbors. Air raid sirens forced residents of Ulleung Island to seek shelter.

South Korea reacted quickly and launched missiles into the same area as the maritime border.

Wednesday’s launches came hours after North Korea threatened to use nuclear weapons to make the United States and South Korea pay “the most terrible price in history” in protest of South Korean military exercises and continued US strikes, seen by the United States. Kim Jong-un regime as a rehearsal for a possible invasion.

North Korea has ramped up weapons demonstrations at a record pace this year and has already fired dozens of missiles, including its first intercontinental ballistic missile demonstration since 2017, as it takes advantage of a potential distraction created by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to boost development. weapons.

The two Koreas are still technically at war, as the 1950-53 conflict ended with the signing of an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
