Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was considering “the beginning of the end of the war” after the recapture of Kherson, where he paid a surprise visit in mid-November. But after the joy caused by the end of the Russian occupation, the inhabitants of this important city in southern Ukraine try to flee.
Because the Kherson region continues to be under fire from Russian shelling. Hospitals are overwhelmed by the influx of wounded, and in two weeks, more than 30 people were killed in Russian attacks. Therefore, the station has now become the focal point of a mass exodus of inhabitants.
“It’s war! They are shooting at us and we are very scared. The day before yesterday we were shelled. A shell fell right next to our house,” Kherson resident Inna told BFMTV.
“Our soldiers liberated us, it was quiet for a few days but the shelling has been intensifying for a week,” says Katarina.
“People were holding on, but now they are afraid”
And it is the Place de la Liberté, where the inhabitants celebrated their liberation a few days ago, where the many outings are organized.
“I came to ask how to be evacuated. I have a nine-month-old brother at home,” said 17-year-old Vlad. The volunteers work tirelessly and do everything they can to help as many people as possible to escape this bruised city.
“We do not live in good conditions. There is no electricity, there is no heating, there are bombings: people are afraid,” summarizes Viktor, one of the volunteers, with BFMTV.
“People were holding out, but now they are afraid. Many come to tell us that the houses are destroyed”, says another volunteer. And for those who can’t wait for a seat on a train, another option is the car: hundreds of vehicles have left the city in recent days. Hoping to flee the war.
