Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, it was announced on the British royal family’s Twitter social network.

“I am very sorry for the death of Queen Elizabeth II, after 70 years of reign, at the end of a long life, in which she embodied better than anyone the monarch of a constitutional monarchy,” Augusto Santos Silva told reporters at a hotel. from Brasilia.

The president of the Assembly of the Republic added that “it is a day of great loss also for Portugal, which is a historical ally of the United Kingdom”, with which it has “the oldest alliance in the world”.

On behalf of himself and the Portuguese parliament, he sent “heartfelt condolences” to the House of Commons, the House of Lords and all Britons.

“Queen Elizabeth II had 15 prime ministers to work with her and she provided all of them with the institutional collaboration of a constitutional monarch,” he said.

Augusto Santos Silva traveled to Brasilia for the bicentennial celebrations of Brazilian independence, at the invitation of the president of the Brazilian Federal Senate.
