The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Wednesday eased covid-19 measures in several districts, implementing directives from national authorities aimed at easing some very strict restrictions against the disease.
The Covid-19 epidemic has strongly affected the metropolis of Canton, an important manufacturing center, part of whose inhabitants demonstrated last weekend against the drastic restrictions imposed.
Clashes broke out overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday between protesters and law enforcement, according to footage posted on social media.
The relaxation of restrictions comes after a decline in the number of infections with the coronavirus that causes the disease in recent days.
Return of face-to-face classes
The authorities of several districts of the city of 19 million inhabitants have announced that they will lift the temporary confinement measures. In-person classes at Conghua District schools can resume and restaurants and other businesses can reopen.
Areas of the city classified as “high risk” will remain closed. Authorities announced late Tuesday that they would allow people who have had close contact with infected people to quarantine at home instead of being forced to go to shelters.
