A new “suspicious” letter was intercepted this Thursday at an important military base near Madrid, the day after the explosion of a letter bomb at the Ukrainian embassy in Spain, according to what the Ministry of the Interior has learned.
“Between three and four in the morning, the security systems of the Torrejón de Ardoz air base detected a suspicious envelope that could contain some type of mechanism,” the ministry reported.
“National Police and Civil Guard personnel have gone to the base to secure the area and police investigators are analyzing this envelope that was addressed to the Satellite Center,” he added.
This base, located not far from Madrid, is used in particular for the trips of official planes of members of the Spanish government.
Preliminary investigation
The head of security at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid was slightly injured this Wednesday by the explosion of a letter bomb intended for the ambassador, which led Kiev to order a reinforcement of security in all its diplomatic representations.
The Spanish justice system has opened a preliminary investigation for alleged acts of “terrorism”.
After the explosion of this letter bomb, another “suspicious” letter was intercepted this Wednesday at the end of the day at the headquarters of the Instalaza arms company, in Zaragoza, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Demining police units proceeded to detonate it.
This company manufactures, in particular, grenade launchers sent to Ukraine by the Spanish government shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.
