The Spanish National Police carried out this Thursday the controlled detonation of a suspicious package found near the Air Force headquarters in Madrid, although no explosive materials or devices have been detected.
According to the EFE agency, the package, which was inside a mop bucket and wrapped in blue plastic with court documents, including a court summons, was found under the Arcos de Moncloa around 3:45 p.m. local time (one more than in Lisbon). . , when the security services of the Air Force headquarters alerted the National Police.
The officials established a security perimeter in the area, forcing them to cut off traffic between Princesa and Isaac Peral streets, and reported the finding to the Provincial Information Brigade, which called in explosives experts.
After confirming that no explosive device was found inside the package, the experts decided to detonate it around 5:15 p.m. (4:15 p.m. in Lisbon), according to the Ministry of the Interior, which also reported that the police coroner was also present at the site to analyze the prints.
On Wednesday a man was seriously injured at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid due to the explosion of a device that was inside an envelope. Since then, the Spanish authorities have revealed the existence of five more letters with explosives, the last of which is in the United States embassy on Spanish soil.
According to the Spanish Government’s Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez, the other envelopes with explosives intercepted in the last week were sent to the Prime Minister, the Defense Minister, a satellite center and an arms company.
The envelope sent to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, was intercepted last week, on November 24, and the rest were identified on Wednesday and today.
Ukraine has been under Russian military attack since February, in an aggression condemned by the international community in general.
Russia today condemned “any terrorist threat or act” after sending these letters with explosives in Spain.
“Any terrorist threat or act, especially directed against a diplomatic mission, is totally reprehensible,” read a statement released today by the embassy of the Russian Federation in Madrid.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Spain, Serhii Pohoreltsev, said today that the embassy is improving its security systems and defended that Russia should be declared a “terrorist state.”
