Torrential rains that have affected various regions of Brazil for several days have killed two more people and displaced more than 4,000 people, authorities said Thursday.
In the state of Santa Catarina (south), the rains caused flooding that killed two people: one person was electrocuted and another was buried by a landslide, according to the local civil defense. One firefighter is still missing.
The images released by the authorities showed entire neighborhoods of the city of Sao Joao Batista, inundated by the flood. In other images, firefighters are seen bringing relief to city streets where water has risen to hip height.
233 deaths in February
To date, the Santa Catarina authorities have reported more than a thousand displaced persons, while in the state of Bahia (northeast), more than 4,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes.
A landslide Monday on a highway in a mountainous region of Paraná state killed at least two people.
On Thursday, firefighters continued to search for missing people under the mud. Their number “has been reduced to less than thirty,” the Paraná government said. Initially, the authorities estimated the number of missing persons at “between 30 and 50”.
In February, 233 people died in Petrópolis, a mountainous region near Rio de Janeiro, from landslides and flooding.
