Russia’s economy “will be destroyed” by limiting oil prices

The Russian economy “will be destroyed” after the introduction of a ceiling for the price of its barrel of oil at 60 dollars, after the agreement sealed by the European Union, the G7 and Australia, declared the Ukrainian Presidency on Saturday.

“We always achieve our goal and Russia’s economy will be destroyed. Russia will pay and be responsible for all its crimes,” Ukrainian Presidential Cabinet Chief Andriy Yermak said on the Telegram social network.

Yermak said that, for him, “I would have lowered [o preço máximo do barril de petróleo] for 30 dollars, to destroy them [os russos] faster”.

The G7 countries, together with Australia, agreed on Friday a price cap of US$60 a barrel for Russian oil, following an agreement reached by the 27 member states of the European Union, according to a joint statement.

After insisting on keeping the limit at lower values, Poland ended up giving in and approving this proposal, which was defended by several countries.

Europe needed to fix the discounted price that several countries would have to pay before Monday, when the EU embargo on Russian oil shipped by sea and a ban on insuring such goods takes effect.

With this decision, the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7, intend to prevent Russia “from benefiting from its war of aggression against Ukraine,” they stressed in the joint statement with Australia.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data. of the UN, which catalogs this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 6,655 dead civilians and 10,368 wounded, stressing that these figures are far below the real ones.
