European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed this Wednesday that a specialized court be set up to try Russia for the “crime of aggression” against Ukraine.
The court must function in parallel with the ICC. And it should also help define the financial compensation for the devastation caused in Ukraine, which Brussels calculates at 600 billion euros.
Von der Leyen believes that “the aggression against a sovereign state” and the “terrible crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine” should not go unpunished.
“We propose the creation of a specialized court, supported by the United Nations, to investigate and charge Russia with the crime of aggression,” announced the president of the European Commission, vowing to fight for the “widest possible support in the international community.
The President of the European Commission understands that Russia must also pay financially for the devastation caused in Ukraine.
“The damage suffered by Ukraine is estimated at 600 billion euros,” he said. “Russia and its oligarchs must compensate Ukraine for the damage and costs of rebuilding the country,” defended von der Leyen, assuring that the European Union has the means to act at the financial level.
“We have blocked 300 billion euros in reserves from the Central Bank of Russia. And we have frozen 19 billion euros from the Russian oligarchs. In the short term, we can create a structure with our partners to manage and invest these funds and we will use the income for Ukraine,” said the president of the community board, foreseeing that “when the sanctions are lifted, this money should be used and thus Russia will pay the full compensation”.
