Since the start of the Ukrainian conflict, Vladimir Putin has passed several laws that restrict the freedoms of its citizens. In early March he had signed a bill introducing stiff prison terms for anyone publishing “false information” about the military.

The penalties, which can reach 15 years in prison, will be applied to those who spread “false information” that has “serious consequences” for the Russian armed forces.

Even more recently, this same Vladimir Putine had amended a law allowing prisoners to join the Russian army. This includes people convicted of robbery, murder, drug trafficking, or other serious crimes under Russian law. On the other hand, detainees who have committed sexual crimes against minors or imprisoned for treason, espionage or terrorism are excluded.

More generally, the Russian president had also ordered martial law in the four Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia annexed in september by Moscow.
