Ukraine: Emergency power cuts in all regions after Russian attacks

“The situation is difficult, but it is under control,” Ukrenergo said, as Kiev forces announced they had destroyed more than 60 of the roughly 70 missiles launched by the Russians.

Ukrainian electricity operator Ukrenergo warned on Monday that emergency power cuts should be applied in Ukraine as the country grapples with the aftermath of new Russian attacks.

“Due to the consequences of the shelling (…), in order to maintain the balance between the production and consumption of electricity, a system of emergency cut-offs will be established in all regions of Ukraine. The supply of electricity will be a priority over the essential infrastructure,” Ukrenergo announced on Telegram.

“The situation is difficult, but it is under control,” Ukrenergo added, as Kiev forces announced they had destroyed more than 60 of the roughly 70 missiles launched by the Russians.

Emergency repairs in progress

However, “some power plants will not be able to operate at full capacity for a while,” according to the operator. “Combined with the frost that will intensify over the next 24 hours, this will lead to a power deficit in the system.” Emergency repairs were underway, according to Ukrenergo.

The Russian military acknowledged “a massive attack carried out with high-precision weapons” around 12:00 GMT on Monday that targeted Ukrainian military sites and energy infrastructure linked to Ukrainian forces.

After suffering humiliating defeats in what has become Europe’s worst conflict since World War Two, Russia began attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in October, causing widespread blackouts.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure were “inevitable.”
