The finance ministers of the eurozone have not reached a consensus this Friday on the appointment of the next executive director of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), a position for which João Leão is running, postponing the vote for the third time.
The discussion was on the agenda of the meeting of the Board of Governors of the ESM, which includes the finance ministers of the euro zone, who met this morning for an informal meeting in the Czech city of Prague, as part of the Presidency of the Czech Republic of the Council of the European Union.
Due to the failure of the consultations prior to today’s meeting of the Eurogroup for consensus, the Board of Governors of the MEE did not even meet to vote on the two names that were on the table for the direction of the MEE, the former Portuguese Finance Ministers João Leão and Luxembourger Pierre Gramegna, which caused a third postponement of the vote, reported European sources.
One of these names should replace the German Klaus Regling, who has been executive director of the Mechanism since its creation, in 2012, and ends his term on October 7, so the succession in the MEE should take place from October 8 .
In view of this new postponement of the vote, the Council of Governors of the MEE, the highest decision-making body of the organization that is made up of government representatives of each of the 19 shareholders of the mechanism, the euro countries, with the Finance portfolio. Portugal is represented by the responsible minister, Fernando Medina.
