Former Russian president and current number two on the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said on Sunday that Russia is producing “more powerful means of destruction” based on “new principles” that would allow it to attack the West.
Our enemy is not only entrenched in the government of Kiev [uma entidade territorial administrativa da Rússia imperial] (…) He is also in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other places that swore allegiance to the Nazis,” said Medvedev. “That is why we are increasing the production of the most powerful, including those based on new principles,” the message continues on Telegram.
Medvedev didn’t detail what those principles would be, but it could be a reference to new generations of hypersonic weapons that Moscow claims to be developing in recent years.
The possibility of nuclear war has loomed ever since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
Recent Russian military defeats on the ground have led to fears that Moscow is considering resorting to its nuclear arsenal.
This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin downplayed the risk of using such weapons, saying he would not use them first, but only “in response” to a possible enemy attack on his territory.
