Concerns and a warning. Britain’s Chief of Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, expressed concern about the state of the world, including the war in Ukraine, during a hearing at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a specialized British think tank. in defense and security. , reported this Wednesday English media.
The world is going through an “extraordinarily dangerous period,” the admiral warned, as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues and tensions rise, particularly between the West and China.
A “brutal aggression” in Ukraine
Among his concerns, the Chief of the General Staff mentioned in particular the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which he describes as “territorial expansion and brutal aggression” with multiple consequences for the belligerent populations and for the rest of Europe.
Sir Tony Radakin denounces a conflict marked in particular by “ethnic conflicts” and “war crimes, such as summary executions”. Deplores the consequences of this conflict both in Ukraine, where “millions of people (are) on the brink of starvation” in Ukraine, and in Western Europe, where “hundreds of millions of people are under pressure from energy prices, inflation and job losses.
“Russia is losing”
The Chief of the General Staff remains concerned about the “nuclear threats” revived in particular by the words of Vladimir Putin who, on several occasions, has hinted that he could use this weapon against Ukraine or its allies.
The admiral’s nuclear warning is not limited to the case of Russia. It also worries Iran, which is developing a nuclear program at high speed, and North Korea, which recently carried out numerous missile tests, including “23 in a single day”, recalls Sir Tony Radakin. But despite this bleak picture, the admiral wants to be optimistic.
“Extraordinary times call for extraordinary responses,” he said, confident that “Russia is losing and the free world is winning.”
He believes that the Russian invasion of Ukraine had the merit of demonstrating “Ukrainian courage and determination” and Russian hardship. “Vladimir Putin inadvertently assembled an extraordinary coalition of democracies against him,” he said again.
