The EU registers 1007 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis among vaccinated children

The European Union has registered 901 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in children between the ages of 5 and 11 vaccinated against Covid-19 with the Pfizer vaccine and 106 in those inoculated with the Moderna vaccine, it was announced this Saturday.

In a joint statement, the General Directorate of Health (DGS), the Ministry of Health and Infarmed point out that these inflammatory diseases “are known complications of Covid-19 and occur more frequently after infection by Covid-19 compared to the observed occurrence. after vaccination.

According to the text, in the European Union (EU) 16.1 million children were vaccinated with Comirnaty brand vaccines [da Pfizer] and 34.1 million from the Spikevax brand [da Moderna]and “no cases of myocarditis were identified in children between 6 months and 4/5 years of age.”

Myocarditis and pericarditis are inflammatory heart conditions that usually manifest with shortness of breath, chest pain, and pounding heartbeats that may be irregular (palpitations).

“Cases referred by the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee [da Agência Europeia de Medicamentos] they were observed mainly in the 14 days after vaccination, more frequently after the second dose and in young male adults”, reads the same informative note.

In the statement, the three entities point out that “according to the available data, the development of myocarditis and pericarditis after vaccination follows a typical clinical picture, generally with improvement after rest or treatment.”

The text explains that “the groups eligible for seasonal reinforcement in the Vaccination Campaign against Covid-19 for autumn-winter 2022-2023, including children with at least one of the risk pathologies defined” by the DGS, ” They are defined based on risk for severe illness, hospitalization, and death from Covid-19 based on a vaccination strategy to protect the vulnerable.”

On Thursday, the DGS, through a regulation published on its website, recommended that health professionals pay attention to the signs and symptoms of myocarditis and pericarditis in children in the first 14 days after receiving the new vaccine against Pfizer’s Covid-19.
