Qatar warns of the “negative impact” of the measures of the European Parliament

The suspension of access authorizations to the European Parliament for representatives of Qatari interests, during the investigation of a possible case of corruption, could have a “negative impact” on relations with the emirate, a Qatari diplomat warned today.

According to the same diplomat, quoted by the Afp, the implementation of this measure could also have adverse consequences on the global supply of gas by Qatar.

On Thursday, in Strasbourg, MEPs voted almost unanimously in favor of a text in which they “demand the suspension of access authorizations for representatives of Qatari interests” during the investigation of the alleged corruption case in which it is involved. Greek MEP Eva Kaili. and in which it is suspected that she has been paid by Qatar to defend the interests of the country, which is currently hosting the World Cup.

The decision to apply this measure will now correspond to the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

The European Parliament, within the framework of the planned measures, admits the possibility of preventing the decision “to impose such a discriminatory restriction on Qatar, limiting dialogue and cooperation before the end of the judicial process, from having a negative effect on the regional security cooperation. and as well as in the discussions on the negotiations on global energy scarcity and security”, the diplomat also pointed out.

In a statement, the diplomat said that Qatar “firmly rejects” the accusations against the country and regrets “judgments based on inaccurate information revealed on the basis of leaks.”

Although it is not the only country cited in the investigation opened by Belgium, the criticism and attacks are directed “exclusively” at Qatar, the same diplomat stressed.

Qatar, a gas-rich state, has already denounced the “lack of cooperation” from the Belgian government, of which it is a “partner [diplomático] next”.

The statement also noted that Qatar is “a major supplier” of liquefied natural gas around the world.
