Amber Heard settles defamation lawsuit with Johnny Depp

American actress Amber Heard announced on Monday that she has reached a settlement in the defamation case brought against her by her ex-husband, actor Johnny Depp.

Heard, who announced the deal in an Instagram post, did not disclose the terms of the deal, which came after the jury ordered the actress to pay Depp $10 million (9.41 million euros).

The 36-year-old actress said she would drop her damages appeal against Depp because she is “simply” unable to face another lawsuit.

“I am making this decision after losing faith in the American justice system, where my public testimony served as entertainment,” he said.

“Now I finally have a chance to get out of something I’ve been trying to get out of for six years and on terms I can accept.”

The actress initially appealed the June verdict to a state court in Fairfax, near the US capital, which ordered her to pay $10 million to the actor, who in turn had to pay $2 million (1.88 million euros). to Heard.

The legal “war” between the two arose after an article published by The Washington Post in 2018, in which Heard described herself as “a public figure representing domestic violence”, without naming her ex-husband.

Depp, 59, claimed the article destroyed his reputation and career and sued his ex-wife for libel for $50 million (€47 million) in damages.

Heard refuted the accusation and demanded double.

At the end of a six-week trial, jurors concluded that both men slandered each other, but that Depp’s damage was greater.

The trial, based on bitterly disputed allegations of domestic violence, revealed intimate details of the Hollywood stars.
