“A once-in-a-generation bomb cyclone.” Extreme cold puts the US on alert

As millions of Americans travel across the country to celebrate Christmas, the United States will be affected by a severe winter storm in the coming days. Low temperatures and snowfall threaten the travel plans of millions of people.

The United States Weather Service [NWS, na sigla em inglês] it has already issued warnings for several states as an arctic air mass approaches that will reduce temperatures to “dangerous and potentially fatal levels,” the Guardian cites.

Forecasters are talking of a “once-in-a-generation bomb cyclone” preparing to hit the central and eastern seaboards with even greater intensity. “Some of the parameters of this intense storm are climatologically off the charts,” the NWS states.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures can drop to “20, 30 degrees below zero” and experts warn that the cold wind will make the wind chill more intense.

Low temperatures could also cause power outages.
