Europol deletes 800 Internet content linked to terrorism and the extreme right

More than 800 contents related to terrorism and violent far-right organizations have been removed from the Internet by Europol, announced Thursday the Information Center against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO) of Spain, which coordinated the operation.

The contents were on 34 servers identified in this operation, which lasted several weeks and ended on December 15, according to a statement from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.

In addition to the Spanish security and intelligence forces, police from different countries, such as the Czech Republic, Denmark, France and Germany, participated in the operation, according to the same statement.

This was the second operation of the Internet Reference Unit (IRU), of Europol (The European Union Agency for Police Cooperation), with the aim of detecting ‘online’ content linked to violent movements of the extreme right.

Having detected “this illegal content, Europol proposed its withdrawal to Internet service providers” for “violating the terms and conditions of the service” they provide, the same statement explains.

“This type of police operation helps digital content platforms to detect their own vulnerabilities, which are exploited by terrorist groups to host illegal material, and reinforce moderation protocols,” the text adds.
