At least eight people were killed and 17 wounded in a Russian attack on the city center of Kherson on Saturday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack an act of “terror”.
“In the morning, on Saturday, on Christmas Eve, in the center of the city. These are not military installations. This is not a war by set rules. This is terror, this is killing to intimidate and (have) pleasure,” Zelensky said on social media.
According to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office on social media, the attack “killed eight civilians and injured 17”, some of whom “were hospitalized with serious injuries”.
“The world must see and understand the absolute evil we are fighting,” lamented Volodymyr Zelensky, once again branding the Russian army “terrorists.”
This is the true life of Ukraine and Ukrainians” in the ten months of war, said the Ukrainian president, accompanying his message with images showing the extent of the damage.
An Agence France Presse (AFP) team at the scene heard a series of shelling, which hit the central market and adjacent streets, before seeing the body of at least one person killed in his car.
The sounds of the shelling were still audible in the middle of the day, according to the AFP team.
The flames also came out of the market, a crowded place this morning in the center of Kherson, a city liberated on November 11 by the Ukrainian army after eight months of Russian occupation.
kyiv troops managed to drive the Russians out of the city after a counteroffensive that lasted several months.
Now under Ukrainian control, Kherson is, however, the usual target of Russian bombing, especially energy facilities.
On Friday, Kherson was the target of 74 Russian attacks, according to regional authorities, which killed five people and wounded 22 others, according to a regional administration bulletin.
