Taliban ban women from working in NGOs

Taliban authorities ordered national and international non-governmental organizations to stop working with women, after “serious complaints” that they were not following a proper dress code, a source at the Economy Ministry told AFP.

“There are serious complaints about non-compliance with the Islamic hijab and other rules and regulations regarding the work of women in national and international organizations,” said the minister in charge of approving the licenses of NGOs operating in Afghanistan, in a letter to which had access to AFP.

A ministry spokesman confirmed that Economy Minister Qari Din Mohammed Hanif sent this order to the NGOs.

No details are known about the measure, which could be another step towards tightening restrictive measures against women in Afghanistan.

Taliban security forces used a water cannon today to disperse women protesting against the ban on university education in Afghanistan, according to eyewitnesses quoted by international news agencies.

The decision to ban women from universities was taken last Tuesday by the Taliban-led government and has sparked outrage and opposition at home and internationally.

Despite initially promising more moderate rules respecting the rights of women and minorities, the Taliban have largely applied their interpretation of Islamic law, or Shariah, since taking power in August 2021.

They barred girls from high school and college, barred women from most career fields, and ordered them to wear head-to-toe clothing in public.

Women are also prohibited from going to parks and gyms. At the same time, Afghan society, while largely traditional, has increasingly embraced the education of girls and women over the past two decades.
