A “dozen” winter sports enthusiasts were buried this Sunday in an avalanche that occurred in Austria, in the Vorarlberg region, police said.
“One person was saved, while the operation continues to find the others,” said a spokesman without giving further details about his fate.
Helicopters and various teams accompanied by dogs were mobilized for the search.
An avalanche at an altitude of 2700 meters
The avalanche broke out around 3:00 p.m. at about 2,700 meters above sea level in the Lech Zürz ski area. No information on the identity of those affected was provided.
Rescue teams had warned this weekend about a high danger of avalanches in this area, as well as in neighboring Tyrol, pointing to the fragility of the snow cover in a context of mild climate. In recent years, in Austria, snow slides have caused an annual average of about twenty deaths.
