South Korea fires warning shots after North Korean drones violated airspace

South Korea fired warning shots Monday at North Korean drones that violated its airspace, the South Korean military said. However, South Korean authorities did not say whether the drones were downed.

While fighting drones, a South Korean KA-1 plane crashed shortly after leaving its base in Wonju, in the east of the country, reports Reuters news agency. Its two pilots managed to escape and are now in the hospital.

The South Korean Ministry of Transportation had stated before the attack that flights out of Incheon and Gimpo airports had been suspended at the request of the military.

North Korea had already revealed its drone program and South Korean officials said the North Koreans would have around 300 of these devices.

However, it is the first time North Korean drones have entered South Korean airspace since 2017. This incident comes three days after South Korea said North Korea had tested two short-range ballistic missiles in the latest tests. of weapons.

This year, North Korea has conducted an unprecedented number of missile tests. The North Koreans also recently claimed to have carried out major tests necessary to launch their first spy satellite and an ICBM capable of reaching the continental United States.
