New York State Requests Storm Disaster Zone Declaration

The governor of the state of New York, Kathy Hochul, asked the US administration to declare the northwest of that state a disaster area, due to the passage of storm Elliot, which caused some 30 deaths.

At a press conference in Buffalo, the city in the state of New York hardest hit by snow and low temperatures, Kathy Hochul, quoted by the EFE agency, highlighted the importance of this measure, to deal with the costs and gastronomy caused for the storm. that caused half a hundred deaths throughout the United States.

The governor added that while the situation has improved, 6 to 12 inches of snow is still expected to fall in southern Erie County, whose capital is Buffalo.

“The situation is not as bad as the last two days, but it is still dangerous to be outside. Stay inside tomorrow,” said Kathy Hochul.

According to local authorities, there were 12,000 homes without power today in Buffalo, where four power substations were damaged by the storm.

According to the mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown, there has been looting in the city, where some people have been detained.

Local media report 27 deaths in New York state, 18 of whom are in Buffalo.

Temperatures well below normal for the season that hits all US states will continue throughout the week, forcing the cancellation of flights and leaving roads extremely dangerous for traffic, in addition to causing power outages in about 1.7 million homes and businesses.

Triggered by an arctic cold front, Storm Elliot stretches from the Great Lakes near Canada to the Rio Grande River along the Mexican border, affecting about 60% of the US population.

Today, the temperature remained very cold in much of the eastern United States, but “there is a trend of moderation as of Tuesday,” said the National Weather Service.

According to this service, it is still “dangerous” to drive on some roads due to snow, but conditions should improve in the coming days.

In several cities on the east coast and even in the state of Florida, known for its mild temperatures, the thermometers marked minimums that had not been reached for several decades.

New York City reached a minimum temperature of -10.5° Celsius (C) on Christmas Day, which had not happened since 1872, while Washington, the capital of the United States, temperatures below zero, which had not happened since 1966 .
