Ukraine wants to hold peace summit at the end of February

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, said this Monday that his government intends to hold a peace summit at the end of February, preferably at the UN and with the Secretary General, António Guterres, as mediator.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Kuleba said he was “absolutely satisfied” with the results of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the US last week, revealing that the US government had drawn up a special plan to prepare for the use of Patriot missiles. in the short term of six months.

Kuleba further said that Ukraine will do everything possible to win the war in 2023, adding that diplomacy plays an important role in that outcome.

“Every war ends diplomatically. Every war ends as a result of actions taken on the battlefield and at the negotiating table, ”the head of Ukrainian diplomacy argued, announcing that he would like to see a peace summit at the end of February.

“The United Nations may be the best place to hold this summit because it’s not about doing a particular country a favour. It’s really about getting everyone involved,” Kuleba explained.

Asked if kyiv would invite Moscow to the summit, Kuleba replied that Russia first needs that country to agree to be prosecuted for war crimes in an international court.

Regarding Guterres’ role in that summit, Kuleba said that the UN Secretary General “has shown to be an efficient mediator and an efficient negotiator.

Ukraine’s foreign minister played down comments by Russian officials that they were ready for negotiations.

“They regularly say that they are ready for negotiations, which is not true, because everything they do on the battlefield proves otherwise,” the head of Ukrainian diplomacy concluded.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 14 million people -6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data. of the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing Russia from the political point of view and economic sanctions.
