At least 25 dead in Christmas floods in the Philippines

At least 25 people died in the floods that occurred on Christmas Day in the Philippines, the authorities indicated this Wednesday, in a new balance.

Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes after torrential rains inundated towns and roads, disrupting Christmas festivities in this predominantly Catholic country.

More than 81,000 people have sought shelter at reception centers, the Philippine disaster management agency said, as efforts to help the hardest-hit populations continue.

In addition to the fatalities, 13 of which were in Misamis Occidental province on the southern Mindanao island, the agency said 26 people remain missing and nine were injured.

The meteorological forecasts point to the continuation of the rains, from moderate to intense, during the day and on Thursday, in the central and southern regions, due to the presence of a zone of low pressure coming from the coast, with the possibility of evolving into Tropical depression. .

“Floods and landslides triggered by rain are possible,” the Philippine Meteorological Institute explained.

On the other hand, the authorities said that aerial reconnaissance operations are being carried out in the Misamis Occidental area to assess the magnitude of the damage.

Weather conditions began to deteriorate late last week in the Philippines, one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to natural disasters and as most of the 110 million people were preparing to celebrate Christmas.
