Balance 2022: from the invasion of Ukraine to the dance of power in the democracies of the world

The year began with a warning about Russia that soon came true: the Moscow regime was preparing to invade the Ukraine. The “special military operation,” as Putin called it, finally got underway in February, but ten months later, the war continues.

Meanwhile, Finland and Sweden have already applied to join NATO and the energy crisis ended up being aggravated by the conflict and the sanctions on Russian gas and oil. Added to this was the rise in inflation.

In Iran, the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of customs police sparked nationwide protests that have continued.

In China, for the first time since Xi Jinping took power, the population demonstrated against the restrictions still imposed due to the “Covid Zero” policy.

In Italy, Mattarella was re-elected president – and Giorgia Meloni became the country’s first female prime minister -, in Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier saw confidence in his work maintained and, in France, Emmanuel Macron, also advanced to a second mandate.

The year was especially eventful in Britain, with Boris Johnson resigning as prime minister in July after a succession of scandals. Liz Truss, the successor, lasted just 45 days in office. The power and leadership of the Government is now with Rishi Sunak.

In Brazil, Lula da Silva returned to the Presidency after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in the second round with an advantage of less than 2%.

Climate change has claimed new victims, with fires in France, Great Britain, Russia, Spain and the United States, but also floods in Pakistan, Nigeria, India, South Africa and Bangladesh.

This year there were also more than 700 shootings in the United States of America, episodes in which close to 750 people died. In Texas, a gunman killed 21 people during an attack on an elementary school: 19 were children. In Buffalo, ten people were killed in an attack on a supermarket.

The year did not end without the dismantling of a far-right terrorist group in Germany that was trying to come to power in the country.
