United States: a 64-year-old man saved by a stranger in Buffalo in the middle of the “blizzard of the century”

A Buffalo resident saved the life of a 64-year-old man who was lost in the storm and whose fingers were frozen.

“This woman has done an incredible thing,” said Yvonne White, sister of Joe, whose life was saved by Sha’Kyra Aughtry last week as the “blizzard of the century” tore through the northeastern US city of Buffalo. .

This storm, which killed at least 53 people across the country at the height of Christmas, completely immobilized Buffalo for five days. The balance could have been even heavier if Sha’Kyra Aughtry had not responded to the call for help from this 64-year-old man this Saturday, December 24 at dawn.

disoriented in the blizzard

Joe White has worked for more than 30 years at the North Park Theatre, a movie theater in Buffalo. On Saturday morning, he goes to work, while he’s normally on leave, his employer told CNN. He then decides to turn around and walk home.

His sister would later confide that he is intellectually disabled and has the mental capacity of an 11-year-old, he reports. buffalo news.

With the poor visibility, he gets lost and his fingers freeze quickly, causing him to get severe frostbite.

That’s when Sha’Kyra Aughtry hears her screaming outside her house. With her husband, she decides to welcome him into her house. But, in the middle of a storm, the aid cannot circulate through the streets of the city. She therefore must provide him with first aid on the spot, including cutting a ring with a garden tool and melting ice on her fingers with a hair dryer.

The call of saving in social networks

As a last resort, Sha’Kyra Aughtry posts a video on Facebook to help Joe, whose health is deteriorating.

“This man is not going to die here or anywhere else, we are going to get him help,” he said.

Sharing his story on social media, some townspeople decide to pick Joe up with an ATV to take him to the ER. With the support of the doctors, his condition quickly stabilized.

Yvonne White, Joe’s sister, quickly realizes the invaluable help provided by Sha’Kyra Aughtry. “This woman has done an incredible thing, taking such good care of him when he is a stranger to her,” she testified.

Still in the hospital, Joe White’s days are no longer in danger.

For its part, the theater, of which he is the longest-serving employee, launched a fundraiser for Aughtry and White, which raised more than $50,000, CNN added.
