Marcelo considers that the war in Ukraine gives “a very special meaning” to 9/11

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Sunday that September 11, 2001 takes on, this year, “a very special meaning” with the challenges posed by the war in Ukraine.

The Portuguese president recalls the anniversary of the attacks in the United States of America (USA), in a message published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, in which he associates the events of 21 years ago with the present world politics: “This year, September 11, 2001 takes on a very special meaning. The outbreak of war in Ukraine is more than just a European event, it is a world event.”

“And it underlines a process, in which 9/11 represented a precursory signal,” reads the presidential message.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa points out that the current crisis “reinforces the growing need for multilateralism in the peaceful resolution of geostrategic conflicts and the role of international organizations in combining efforts to face global problems.”

The President of the Republic adds that “September 11 was a manifestation of the clash of conceptions of life and the world, questioning basic values of respect for the dignity of people, freedom and universal tolerance.”

“The moment we live in, after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, reveals how far we are from those values and principles that presided over the creation of the United Nations and the adoption of its Charter”, he concludes.

Almost 3,000 people died 21 years ago in the United States when a group of Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked three planes that hit the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.
